Needle / EyeNeedle / Eye
Given a long enough timeline, even with strict adherence to treatment protocols, complications occur. My parents have always instilled a mindset in me that I should try to stay healthy enough so that I can take advantage of new healthcare options as they become available.

Retinopathy refers to damage to the blood vessels of the retina in the eye and is the first complication I encountered, but not until the late 2000s. Treatment options included laser eye surgery, steroid injections, and off-lable Avastin injections. Eye injections are the kind of thing you laugh at until you realize your eye doctor is serious, and wants to stick a needle straight into your eye. Still, I did it.

One of the worst parts was when my eye doctor pulled out the needle and said "Oops, I didn't get all the medicine in the shot, I'll need to do the procedure again." It was a painful process, but worth it. I would do this all again if it meant saving my eyesight.
